Challenge ~ Week12

Recipe Hacks

For weeks now we have been preparing, stockpiling, and preserving food. However, have you stopped to think about what you are going to make with all the items in your new preparedness pantry?

Sure, peanut butter and crackers is a good snack, jerky will tide you over, the edible items you have saved up will keep you alive...but after a while of eating the same dishes it's going to get old and you will start craving some of your favorites from before you went off grid. Now is the time to start thinking about what you can make with few ingredients that will satisfy both your hunger and your tastebuds.

What are your favorite meals? Will they be difficult to get with no more grub hub or nearby restaurants? Some of them may be replicable with a few little recipe hacks. One of our favorite recipe hacks is of a versatile and tasty classic, PIZZA! Did you know that you can make pizza dough out of just two, that’s right, two ingredients!? Greek yogurt and self-rising flour. Here is our favorite recipe for Two Ingredient Pizza Dough. The best part about pizza is you can top it with just about anything. Don’t have tomato sauce, substitute olive oil and garlic for the base. Don't have pepperoni, try that can of anchovies that has been lurking at the back of the pantry. Ha! Just kidding, don't do that unless you really like anchovies.

This brings us to the next recipe hack, substitutions.

There will be times when certain ingredients are also hard to get. Knowing your proper baking and cooking substitutions will help you get out of a jam if you are missing a key ingredient. Here is a handy little cheat sheet from The Fresh Cooky. You can find this page in the Journal section to download and print for your recipe book.
